CARRERA SL7 is the racing bike designed for those who have big goals. Thanks to the numerous technical and mechanical properties that make it the most modern and advanced standard for maximum performance.
As everyone in this industry is known, lightness and rigidity are characteristics that are opposite in a frame. In order to coexist, it is necessary to choose with great study and accuracy both the materials and the geometry of the tubes.
T800 carbon fiber and M46J from Toray Industries Inc. was the perfect choice to meet the rigidity, strength and processability requirements. In order to maximize the mechanical performance of carbon fibers, the technological molding process must also be at the same level: the carbon layers must be oriented in the right directions and must be compacted into a solid laminate without porosity and heterogeneity.
That's why CARRERA Podium chose EPS (Expandable Polystyrene Shell) technology. Thereby, the fibers remain during the "curing process", i. curing of the resin and solidification of the laminate at temperature and pressure, in the correct orientation. The result is tangible: a better interior finish of the frame, but above all a better production quality of the composie part.
The rigidity of the tubes and thus of the entire frame is enhanced by the particular round shapes of the tubes and the cross sections with ratios between the two orthogonal dimensions close to 1, whereby high moments of inertia required to calculate the condition can be obtained.
Another contribution is the special investigation of the chassis nodes, with which the wiring harness exchanges the voltages. For example, the particular "flattened and flared" shape of the horizontal tube at the saddle node provides good structural continuity between vertical shrouds and horizontal tube, giving the frame a high torsional rigidity and high reactivity during the shear phases.
Another important example is the range of motion box: asymmetric for functional needs to accommodate the crank, connecting horizontal slats with down tube and seat tube, thanks to FEM (Finite Element Method) simulations. This node could also be optimized, and as can easily be observed, the asymmetry needed to improve the stress exchange also affected the seat tube and down tube.
In addition to the purely mechanical aspects, SL7 has significant technical features, such as the integrated cable plate, which allows for the integration of control transmission cables, and special reversible shroud seals to ensure the compatibility of electronic and mechanical groups. Finally, SL7 road bike specifications complete the 1 "1/8 and 1" 1/4 conical steering underneath, the seat post Ø31.6, the press box Ø41 × 86.5 and the cover compatibility from 25mm.
